Dear Friends, Family and Fellow Prayer Warriors,

This week has been very crazy. Last time I sent out a solid email was two weeks ago. I say solid because last week i went out an email, but i’m not sure if any of you got it. Hotmail decided to change a couple of vital settings on their server which made it impossible to send emails from the Mail program on my computer. last week i spent hours and hours in various internet cafes trying to send emails. i tried different connections, different times of day. Nothing worked. well long story short, I called Apple and they helped me reconfigure everything. It works now. thanks alot Hotmail for this very stressful adventure.

First off I want to say thank you to the group at Jericho Road who is praying for me RIGHT NOW! Its cool thinking of all of you right now praying for me. What a great example of what the BODY of Christ should be. i tell people about my church from america. I LOVE telling them that “church” is not a kata benda but a kata kerja. these words mean noun and verb but i like the literal better. ”Church” is not a “thing word.” Its an “activity word.” Praise God that I have a body of believers that not only believe this as all Christians should, but a body that DOES it. I love you all at Jericho. For all you who do not know about our church, this may give you some insight into the congregation. Today, Sunday the 14th, my “church” is not at “church.” Instead they find it important and even fun to GO and BE the church once a month. So today and yesterday they have been going out into the community and meeting needs of people in the name of Jesus Christ, the suffering servant. There is a group of people right now who are meeting a very important need right now. They are meeting in Kevin’s house and praying for Ari, Ace, Ari’s baby in the belly, and me. Thank you Jericho Road.

So like i said, this week has been crazy. Last Sunday was a fun day. Some village kids and I went out to make a sling shot and catch birds and crayfish. Church was a bummer bummer because the pastors were over an hour and a half late for church. We didn’t wait. Really made me miss Jericho. Well Monday came and started the craziness. After eating breakfast with Ari and Ace I met a friend outside named Nas. I asked him what he was doing for the day and he said he was driving into Wamena. Immediately a lightbulb appeared above my head. I had a brilliant idea that i would go with him and take Ace to give Ari a day off from rowdy boys. When i say rowdy boys I am referring to Ace and me but also to the legion of Papuan children that follow Ace and me. Also, i decided i could get alot done on internet in Wamena. I ran inside to present the idea to Ari and she agreed and the boys of the house were out in 30 minutes off to Wamena. The drive in was great. I drove the truck which doubles as a taxi to help pay for gas. I can now put “Papuan Countryside Taxi Driver” on all my future job applications. HAHA If I do this the Indonesian government will hunt me down for “working” illegally in their country. Ill be blacklisted for sure. ha. So the drive was great. I spent great quality time with Nas, a teacher at Netaiken. He is such a good friend to me. We mess with each other all the time. Its is SOSOSOSO refreshing to be insulted in a loving way by a Papuan. So far i have only had two types of interactions from Papuans. The first is “Your white and you have stuff, I love you! Be my friend!!!” and the other is, “your a westerner and I dont like you so i wont talk to you.” I get MUCH MUCH more of the first than the second. Nas is a real friend for me. Last time Nas and I drove to wamena, the car broke down in the middle of nowhere. This time it broke down again, but in the city. Praise God. Being in wamena was like running a short distance sprint while carrying a toddler who doesn’t want to be carried. I had more things to do than i had time for. AND i had Ace. I appreciate Ari in a new way now. She is a great mom. So i dont need to get into details because i already said this at the top. Wamena was stressful. I came with things to do and i got nothing done.

I came back from Wamena very emotionally tired. I was wired from driving home in the dark. driving to Pyramid in the dark makes Lakeshore Drive pot holes feel like a newly paved sidewalk. Its bad. I jumped right back into classed. They are still hard for us. I have no idea how to prepare a lesson from scratch. theres no internet so i can’t research during the week and my weekends in Wamena are PACKED. I wake up every morning thinking, ” Hmmmm, what should we do in class today.” In high school I was a TA(teachers assistant) for Matt Dominguez. I helped him and saw how he did things but i didn’t learn HOW to teach. This is a whole new ball game for me. One homework assignment Ari gave the students was to write a story using pronouns. One student wrote a story about how much the class appreciates Air and me. Ari cried when she read it and it touched my heart as well. Whether this was true about the whole class or not, she made it clear it was true of her. I know that we are not teachers and we are not here for long, but its nice to know when someone appreciates us. We cant change Papua or even a Papuan in a month, but maybe we can nudge them in a good direction.

We are really connecting with the students. We love them so much. I told a student that i liked him the other day and later during the growth group meeting he shared how much that meant to him. He said that no one has ever said anything like that to him. His family and friends never affirmed him. To hear that a guy all the way around the world not only loves him, but LIKES him! I call myself a Christian and Christians should love one another, but liking someone is different. God calls us to love our enemies but im not sure if He commands us to LIKE them as well. Its hard to like someone while they are causing you to suffer. I didn’t know it at the time, but that comment has opened a door into this students life and has produced a relation that is richer and deeper than it was before i said it. This is one example of many. We love it here. Everyday the students ask us when we are going to leave and everyday I find myself adding days to our departure back to Sentani.

One upsetting thing in my life (pat) for this week has been my relationship with the village kids. All week there were only two kids who came and wanted to spend time with me. I asked them on Wed if everything was ok and they didn’t know why. On Friday Melison had a story. He told me that on thursday, Opiar killed a huge bird and they all wanted to eat it. Melison said,” Why dont we take it to show pat and he can eat it with us?” Opiar responded with a vulgar and offensive comment about me. Melison asked if he was mad and several kids answered yes. OK, so there are three possible truths here. 1. Melison and Mikel lied to me so i would like them better than the other kids. 2. Melison or mikel told the kids a lie about me and made them hate me, again, so i could pick them to be my favorites. 3. I did something unknowingly to offend them and thus palang or block in our relationship. Friday night i went outside to get something and i noticed ONE keen (hiking shoe/sandal) was missing. I couldn’t help but replay the dozens of comments i get from kids daily about how nice my shoe would be for making the leather strap in slingshots. This has been hard for me. I cant get far without those keens and they have served me well for almost three years. Pray that God gives me wisdom in this situation. I need it.

Our plans are to stay at Netaiken for another 3-4 weeks. we were planning on going back to sentani in one week but we aren’t done yet. Next week on saturday i am hiking down to the Balim River with my growth group. there we will “make fun.” Im wondering what this means because when i ask what they do to have fun at the Balim River, they dodge my question. Its either because they don’t understand what i am saying or because they are plotting evil against me, like surprising me and throwing me into the freezing cold water. We will have to see. Either way, I will absolutely love it. After that we Ari, Ace and I hope to go to Bokendini to visit Ari’s Uncle Scotty and his family. He is starting a school very similar to Papua Harapan but done VERY differently. It will be good for us to see these two different methods. We both love and respect Scotty and his wife Heidi. They have been influenced us alot in our decisions since we have been married. I here the roaches are bad there. Im a little scared. We both hate roaches. haha.

In addition to everything above, please pray for our health. Ace has bad diarrhea. He also isnt getting enough vitamin C and Protein. We bought some things this weekend to help with that but please pray for him. He is SOSOSOSOSOSOSOSO happy here. You wouldn’t know he is sick unless you change his diapers. we have so much great video but we cant upload it because of internet. You all will have to wait 2 months. Ari is feeling sick alot. Partly because she really is sick and partly because she is pregnant. Also, her malaria medicine makes her throw up. Pray for that to be easier. Its very important for her to take. Also keep praying for my foot. Im off crutches HALLELUJAH!!! My foot is week, please pray for strength.

Thank you all for keeping up with our trip. We really feel your prayers. I keep saying this again and again only because it is made truer and truer each week. This will be a hard place to leave.

I hope this email gets through!!!!,

Dear Family and Friends,

This week has been both wonderful and challenging. We are learning a lot about doing ministry and investing time in our family and marriage. It’s really exciting and hard and we love it.

We have been helping out in the classrooms: speaking english and helping them practice pronouncing things that sound the same, like “LOVE” “LAUGH” and “LOAF.” As funny as it is to hear Papuans say, “I am in loaf with her” they really want to learn english as fluently as possible, and we’re the best candidates to do that up here. All of the teachers are teaching english as a second language, with english BEING their second language. Though they’re doing great, it is still easier for a native speaker to hear what sounds right with pronunciation and sentence structure.

Yeah. We’re doing great. We love it in the mountains. Every day after class, we eat lunch as a school and then everyone goes off to do their afternoon chores. Cutting the lawn, working in the vegetable gardens, finding rabbit food (rabbits are for food and income, not cute cuddly pets) washing dishes, preparing for dinner and cutting firewood are some of the chores they all do. Sometimes we help out but on the days that we can’t participate, Pat has made friends with the local village kids and they have come up with many things to do together. The last three days they spent making a crayfish trap out of bamboo and mesh and plastic string. The kids LOVE him and he loves them. He comes in for dinner after spending all afternoon with the kids breathless and wired from having his “extrovert batteries” charged. He is really great at being their friend and not letting them get away with bad attitudes or unfair playing. In a very male-dominated society, Pat is teaching these boys to be “gentlemen.” Instead of pushing the girls out of the way when looking at pictures on the computer, Pat makes the boys make room for them and speak politely. Instead of rushing ahead of an old woman burdened with produce from her garden, Pat makes the boys help her up the hill and step out of the way politely as she passes on the narrow trails. They bring him offerings of different jungle delicacies. Water lizards (Werer), cicadas, spiders, creek shrimps, all kinds of jungle fruits. Maybe some of you have seen the pictures, Ace and Pat both thoroughly enjoy these.

Ari spends her afternoons with the girl students. There are about 60 students total. Only 9 are girls; Elizabeth, Annie, Yati, Jane, Eriana (Rina), Fenny, Yorina, Novita, Mia and Nilam is the wife of one of the 3rd year students. It’s great to connect and make relationship with them. Most highland Papuan girls are expected to be wives, mothers, pig raisers, garden makers and harvesters. So when girls have the opportunity to be educated, it opens many doors for them. They ask questions, they have dreams, they expect to marry educated men and raise educated children… I love talking with them. I’ve also been connecting with old friends. Or, more like my old friends’ younger siblings. Lots of my girl friends are married and have their own kids, most live in the city or other villages with their husbands. Almost all of my boy friends are gone to live in the city. Many have died-from AIDS, from being involved with the freedom movement. It is humbling to think of all of these little kids-siblings of my friends-growing up and possibly coming to the same fate as their older siblings. Where is the hope? Getting teachers to stay in schools to teach these kids to give them a chance at the future is a start. Maybe this could be OUR future; giving these kids opportunities or at least choices to make.

Ace is doing really well. He’s pretty tolerant of people pinching him and goggling at him. In Indonesian, there’s a word that they use: “gemas.” Gemas is a noun-cute and a verb-pinch on and kiss, in English we say “i’m gonna get you” in Indonesian the closest equivalent is “i’m gonna gemas you.” He loves the freedom he has up here. He can walk out into the yard and go where ever he wants and climb on anything and the local kids are always present to entertain him and comfort him incase he falls or decides to wander a little too far. Ha! I was commenting to someone how bored he’ll be in America because he doesn’t get this kind of freedom or attention in the US. He is as fascinated with the local fauna as his father is. The lizards, the bugs, the dogs the goats and pigs… The Dani family dwelling is built in a semi-confined area with a central “kitchen” for everyone to use. The pigs are kept in the kitchen building at night and fed. We were visiting a friends house around dusk when all the pigs were returning from their foraging. Ace was exhilarated! He squirmed in my arms wanting to be down on the ground with the pigs… until they started squealing to remind us that they were hungry. That kinda freaked him out. All the way home he pointed at pigs in the distance and imitating their squeals, “wrhee, wrhee, wrhee…” We went to church this morning, (sunday) and unfortunatly the pastors did not show up. we didnt stay too long but it sure made us thankfull for our home church, jericho road. Thanks Jericho for being who you are. My heart continues to break for these kids im meeting (This is pat now). i hear countless stories of kids whose parents have died. many dont go to school not because they are lazy but because they dont have parents to pay for it. Please continue praying for us and these kids.

The students have been split up into “growth groups” and we are each hosting/leading one. Ari’s group is: Yorina, Jane, Fenny, Mia and Nilam. Pat’s group is: Samuel, Demas, Karl, Max, Peleng, Peter, Robert, Hengri, Joshua, and Kiel. Please pray for US. (big US=not just Pat and Ari. everyone in the group)

We Love You All So Much,

Next update will be on saturday,

Pat and Ari

Prayer Requests:

Ace – he has had diarrhea since we got here. It’s yucky and it makes his butt sore.

Growth groups – pray that God will be present in our meeting times and that they will be Spirit led

Family and ministry balance.

A student-Eranus-his mom died last week. Pray for him and his family and for us in relating to him.

I had a great morning with the xrays today. so here is what i was expecting to happen. i assumed i would arrive early (7:30AM) to find a long line of people waiting to get xrays. i also assumed the xray staff would be late. it is not uncommon for them to show up at 830, 900 or even close to 10:00 (Clinic opens at 8AM) i brought money to pay the clinic 15 dollars per xray which is the going rate.i really thought this would be an all day event and i would miss my cut off time of sending the xrays to my doctor before noon. ok so here is the real story, thank you all for praying, this is only because of you.

I woke up late this morning because i was up late putting the pictures on facebook. grabbed a banana and flew out the door, well, if hobbling on crutches can really be called “flying.” i got to the clinic early but only 15 minutes early. ”Flew” to the radiology to see NO ONE waiting in line. “YES, one burden down” i say to myself. walking to the radiology building(thats right, no need to fly, im making good time) i see a papuan man on a bike. it was a nice bike and i day dreamed using it for one of my chop shop bike projects in the states. i didnt know who he was or where he was going but i wanted to talk to him being that i was early and may be waiting for several more hours. i told him in indonesian that i liked his bike and invited him to look at my laptop and see my bikes in america that i have built. after seeing my bikes he asks me about my foot and i tell him. he told me in indonesian, quick, lets do it now before this place opens. when it opens there will be alot of people and i will have to wait for quite a while. i said, do we need to wait for the xray technician? and he said, “i am the xray technician” wow, great. i got my xrays taken at 7:55 he developed them and i had them in hand by 8:10. when i went to pay he only charged for one. huge blessing. money is tight right now because the insurance is still deciding whether or not to pay that 4000 dollar surgery. it frustrates me that they made it so easy to GIVE them money but make it so very difficult to RECEIVE the money. anyway, we are awaiting response from the doctor now. i doubt i will get that response before i leave to go back so you all will have to wait two weeks to hear if i could walk now or in two weeks. kind funny timing. thanks for your prayers thus far. the xray was to my knowledge and a nurse here from america in decent quality. pray that the jakarta doctor agrees and can make a quick and accurate decision. I took some pictures of my experiance so here you go. maybe if i can, i will come to wamena to update you when i get news but its a long drive so probably not.

Well, here we are, at home in Pyramid. In Sentani, due to the housing situation we were moving at least every week. Being in Pyramid will be so nice because finally we are in a “home” setting. We don’t have to move at all for at least 4 weeks. The coolest part about it for me (Pat) is definitely the electricity… or lack there-of. It may sound funny but I am sitting in our living room right now next to a wood stove (thats right baby, we are in the mountains now, no more ridiculous heat at night, it is COLD at night here…like three comforters cold) and no other lights are on. My computer is plugged into a generator that is on for only 3-4 hours a day so very soon I will loose my battery charge. Cell phones don’t work very well. There are three spots to get “signal,” and “signal” means MAYBE one bar every once in a while. To get this “signal” I can either walk outside my house to a spot under a giant pine tree, and 4 feet to the left of the tree the grass is all dead because this is where all the students come to send and receive text messages. The other option is to walk thirty minutes down the road to a 3 foot by 3 foot square near a giant rock called “Pyramid Rock.” I don’t think it looks like a pyramid but everyone else does so thats why we call this place “Pyramid.” If I don’t already have pictures up, I will next week or the following week. We cant go into wamena for internet more than once a week if even that, it’s a one hour drive and gas is 8-10 dollars a gallon. So all that to say, we are in a pretty remote area. I love it, my cell phone is only good for telling time. No one can reach me even if they wanted to. I wish I could do that in the states. With work schedules and the busyness of life, we have really made the cell phone a daily asset. We are helping with the school called Netaiken. “Netaiken” is the local word for “Heart.” This is a HUGE blessing to us. These are Papuans who are totally going against the flow here. They have so much hope and such amazing visions for their lives. Despite our lack of education and lack of our experience, they have asked us to help with the classes while we are here. This may seem crazy but we are only doing english type stuff and very very basic english stuff at that. Monday’s Ari and I have the 6th semester students for Grammar and Reading or Writing. Tuesday we have the second semester group of students for Listening and Speaking. Wednesday thru Friday we have 6th semester again with Speaking and Listening and Reading and Writing classes. Phew. Because this is the first week of the semester, our main goal was to get to know the students and find out “where they are at” and what they want from us. We told them “We’re not teachers, but we’ll do our best to give you what you want.” Pat had the students tell us a little bit about themselves, who they are, where they’re from, what they want to do with the education they’re getting. It was amazing hearing these young people’s dreams. I felt like I was sitting among the future of Papua. It is very rare to hear of a Papuan owning a business and to hear these guys talk about dreams of going to seminary or business school or be pilots and teachers is super. I (Pat) feel humbled because God has privileged me to see into the future of this island. The neatest thing about Netaiken is that the program is rooted in Christ and integrity. In a country full of corruption, there are few to stand for Christ and integrity. Pat is really stoked about this and talks about it all the time, if anyone wants to hear more, just email and we can write more about initial impressions, otherwise, you’ll just hear all about it when we get back to the US. Please pray for us to be able to offer these students something tangible. I don’t believe that I was born to be a teacher and I definitely don’t have any training, but God has given me a personality and a spirit that craves this interaction and a longing to invest and love those who Christ calls the least of these. i may have a lot going against me in this situation with my broken leg and teaching experience but I am resting in the fact that in my weakness, He is strong and through Him, I am strong. God is the one who shaped my personality and molded my spirit into what it is now. This is my weakness and His strength working together for His purpose. I love you all so much and I miss all of you so much. It is a miracle that we are here and God is teaching us and working through us in so many ways. You all are a part of that miracle so I thank you so much for being involved! I will do my best to keep you all updated as much as possible. I think I may send out spurts of emails. Thanks again.

Pat

Sorry to keep changing things on you all but here is the new schedule. i wrote you all on monday morning and i was feeling great. we were planning to leave for wamena and pyramid on wednesday…which is today. unfortunately, that night all my symptoms returned, fever, headache, body ache etc. so i texted the doctor and she suggested i come into the clinic. i got my blood tested to find that i have a bacteria infection in my gut. AND i don’t remember if i told you all or not but i have this weird rash on my arm. she told me it was bug bites and unrelated to the fever and other symptoms. SOOOO we added two more meds to my “grand-pa arsenal” and are waiting to see what they do. a friend of ours is going from the wamena airport to the netaiken school we are staying on monday so we have planned to leave on monday. Please pray that we don’t get sick again, its getting a bit ridiculous now. we had a great chat with our mentors here. Barry said that God teaches us in ways He knows we will listen. in my case, i feel drawn towards the least of these and they aren’t the healthiest people in the world. The easiest way to feel compassion for someone is to go through their trials with them. So i don’t know what all He is teaching me, but this is definitely one thing that is helping me relate to the people more. The rest of this week will be mostly to get better! i am disappointed about the pace of our trip so far but i know that we can be so much more helpful in pyramid if we are healthy. so we are using this time to recuperate. all three of us are sick in some way. we want to get pictures out so bad but its so hard to do this. you will get pictures soon, we are doing our best. The insurance hasn’t gotten back to us yet so keep praying. thanks for all your support! We love you! I love your responses, Thanks.

Hello dear friends,

Writing emails and getting them sent is very hard right now. We have been planing to get to wamena for the last week. we were supposed to leave this morning actually, monday morning, but i have been sick since thursday. i woke up today feeling 100% healed from that bout of whatever it was, bad fever, upset stomach, aches all over, the works. also, i had thrush after my surgery from the strong antibiotics, and that lasted all the way up until my fever started. as soon as my fever and sickness was over i got a rash up my arm and down my side. i feel like an old person, i have to take so many pills every day. 2 bone calcium pills, a garlic pill, an oral liquid thing for the thrush, ibuprofen for foot swelling. its intense. well we couldn’t leave today but now that im not so sick we will buy tickets for Wednesday. we have been getting food here because its SO expensive interior. because of its location EVERYTHING is expensive, about 3 times the price compared to here. just to give you all a reference, gas there equates to 10 bucks a gallon. here is about 2.50 to 3.00. we are excited to get there though. there is so much need. we will fly into wamena and then a friend will drive us out to a place called pyramid. its an amazing place. Ari actually grew up there. we will be in pyramid most of our time but will be traveling back to wamena every wednesday and to a place call bokondini for the last 3rd of our trip interior. netaiken is a school in pyramid. it is similar to the school we have been helping with so far call ttip but do to its location, has a few more setbacks. we hope we can truly be a help and not a burden here. having native english speakers alone should be HUGE because they have none and their primary educational focus is english. on wednesdays we will go to wamena to help aki logo with his kids home. supposedly the structure is a bit different so we will fill you all in when we get there. for those who don’t know , basically this man is a papuan who works with street kids and gives them resources to come and bathe, eat, do homework, work on computers etc… In bokondini we will be with Ari’s aunt and uncle. they run a school there and is very much the same idea as papuan harapan but done in a totally different way. Scotty’s (ari’s uncle) school has the school out in the village where the kids live were as papua harapan has the school in the city and flies the kids in. right now both of these schools have elements that attract us and repel us so we want to experience both first hand to feel out those differences. Tomorrow which is tuesday night for all of you is when we should here back from our insurance. please pray that they pay for the surgery or that God will provide this unexpected cost. im nervous but i know i shouldn’t be, so i am working on getting rid of that. we should be in the interior for 4-6 weeks. internet will be VERY hard, even harder than it is now, so you may not here from us for a while. please continue in prayer because it is felt. everyday i pray God that i have people like you to lift us up before the lord. so keep doing it, its working! We love you all!!!!

Pat

Prayer Requests On monday the insurance company will tell us whether or not they will pay for the surgery.

Our good missionary friends got robbed at knife point the other day and had three ipods several cell phones, backpacks and other things stolen. after confronting the adults, the four men went up the river where two high school girls were. they grabbed the girls and dragged them to opposite sides of the river. at that point one of the male adults got up there in time to say “Let those girls go!” in dani, the heart language of the assailants. miraculously, as if he had an authority up river he did not posses downriver when he tried the same words, the men let go and fled. Gods spirit was there and thank God nothing worse happened. please pray for the 4 robbers that they too felt Gods spirit there and were truly affected by it. also pray for everyone affected by the robbery. in all, three adults, several high school boys and 2 high school girls.

Family health!!!
